WORLD PREMIERE

Part of this year’s Documentary Shorts

UNFOLDING is a documentary short film (15:31) shot in Brooklyn and Upstate New York.
UNFOLDING follows Mai Mizuno, who in 2018 joined hundreds of other USC students and alumni to speak out against USC gynecologist George Tyndall, who abused hundreds (if not thousands) of women over nearly three decades.
Mai spent years in the pre-trial process – meeting with LAPD, DA, and press, and lobbying to extend the statute of limitations for Tyndall survivors. She was finally set to take the stand in the Fall of 2024.
But months before that, Tyndall died. The trial was dismissed. Mai would no longer get her day in court.
UNFOLDING follows Mai in the quiet aftermath of the case, long after the headlines fade. One year after Tyndall’s death, instead of taking the stand, we capture Mai as she moves into a new home and reconnects with rituals passed down from her mother and grandmother – rituals that have endured generations of imperial violence and patriarchal oppression.
UNFOLDING becomes a record of Mai’s story – not in the cold, rigid architecture of a courtroom, but in the warm, intimate space of the home she is creating. As she shares her story, animation brings her inner world to life, inviting the audience into the imaginative realm where her healing and freedom become possible.
