Taemong (2026)

  • AFS Cinema 6259 Middle Fiskville Road Austin, TX, 78752 USA (map)

WORLD PREMIERE

Part of this year’s Texas Shorts

The film begins with a pregnancy photoshoot, where Lily, the photographer, explains the concept of a “Taemong,” a Korean conception dream. This symbolic dream is dreamt by the mother and signals the conception and destiny of the child. As these dreams can also be dreamt by people close to the mother, taemongs can be playfully sold and traded. Her friend and client, Gemma, makes cursory side remarks that remind Lily of her failed pregnancy. In the last moment, Lily offers to sell her taemong to Gemma, a vision that was seen briefly at the opening of the film. Gemma, reluctantly “buys” the dream, unaware that Lily’s dream contained a spoiled peach - a sign of miscarriage.

In its essence, this film balances a beautiful traditional concept of the taemong with the twist of a revenge plot, questioning the validity of outdated cultural customs and exploring the idea of hope, potential, and loss. The film highlights dream-like moments, including 8mm analog camcorder footage from intimate, real moments of the director’s life.
