For a documentary film to make a difference , a solid strategy for audience engagement and strong partnerships are key. Filmmakers often lack time to do this work themselves or the expertise and resources to make an impact campaign happen. Emerging filmmakers and underrepresented filmmakers can face the biggest hurdles, despite the immense potential of their projects. Working Films’ response to this challenge is the Impact Kickstart, a program offering partnership and strategy development support to underrepresented filmmakers with feature-length films that hold great promise to catalyze action to address critical and current social issues.

Now in its eight year, we are inviting our community of filmmakers to apply to Impact Kickstart. We will select and support a cohort of filmmakers with impact campaign funds in the range of $10,000 - $20,000, with an anticipated announcement in late 2025 and disbursement in early 2026. In addition to funding, awardees will have access to mentorship and impact strategy support from the Working Films team and the cohort of grantees.

The deadline to apply for Impact Kickstart applications is Friday, October 3, 2025 at 11:59 pm ET.

Dedicated to supporting the Asian, Asian American, and Pacific Islander communities, The Zhao-Chen AAPI Voices Fund recognizes the critical importance of funding for filmmakers developing and delivering their films and the value of investing in Kartemquin’s collaborative model of nurturing early-career filmmakers. Through this fund, Kartemquin is advancing impactful and dynamic stories reflecting on the varied experiences of the AAPI community that challenge and inspire – both filmmakers and the communities they represent.

Kartemquin Films has launched the open call application window for the third round of the Zhao-Chen Family AAPI Voices Fund. During this round, we will support three (3) short documentary films, with a $40,000 grant and a co-production agreement with Kartemquin for each project.

Applications are being accepted from now until Monday, September 22nd at 6:00pm CT.

In our consideration of applications, we will be prioritizing projects that adhere to the following:

• Center AAPI-stories and communities in the U.S. with meaningful connections to the communities on which their project focuses;

• Be working on a short documentary film project (NO features or series at this time);

• Are not enrolled in a degree seeking program for the duration of the funding cycle;

• Be in early- to mid-production.

This grant supports Texas-based creators working on short narrative, documentary, animated, or experimental films. Applicants can request up to $10,000 in funding for projects in pre-production, production, or post. The current grant cycle is open to film projects shorter than 40 minutes in length, and filmmakers from all backgrounds who live in the state of Texas are encouraged to apply for up to $10,000 in cash and a few other in-kind awards.

• MPS Camera and Lighting Award

• A multi-day camera package rental from MPS Studios (valued up to $10K). Grantees must meet insurance requirements, and the package is subject to availability. MPS must be credited in the final film.

• TBD Color and Conform Award

• An in-kind award for post-production finishing services, including color grading and conforming support. Recipients will need to credit TBD in the film’s credits.

The SFFILM Documentary Film Fund (DFF) supports engaging documentaries in post-production which exhibit compelling stories, intriguing characters, and an original, innovative visual approach. Since its launch in 2011, the SFFILM Documentary Film Fund has distributed more than $900,000 to advance new work by filmmakers nationwide.

DFF grants are awarded once each year to documentary feature projects and are open to filmmakers internationally. The Documentary Film Fund grants its support to approximately 3-4 projects each year with grants of $10,000 – $15,000. As with all SFFILM grants, in addition to the cash awards, recipients will gain access to numerous benefits through the comprehensive and dynamic SFFILM Makers artist development program.

AFS Travel Grants are awarded to Texas-based filmmakers to assist with the costs of participation in competitive film festivals around the world. At AFS, we understand that independent filmmakers often have minimal access to financial support during this key moment to share work with future stakeholders and develop relationships in the industry.

AFS grants funds on a discretionary basis for filmmakers premiering at major festivals. We offer these funds as traditional AFS Travel Grants if you plan to attend a festival with an in-person program.

Texas-based filmmakers with proof of travel and an official acceptance letter to a festival on the AFS Travel Grant list are eligible to receive $500 for festivals in the US, Canada, and Mexico and/or $1000 for festivals outside of North America. Filmmakers can receive TWO travel grants during the life of their film not to exceed $1,500.
