We Stand with Reproductive Freedom

Our work at the Austin Asian American Film Festival (AAAFF) is rooted in expanding and deepening understanding of the AAPI experience. AAAFF will continue to uplift and provide avenues for anyone affected by the overturning of Roe v. Wade to share their stories and learn about the resources they need to make decisions for their reproductive health.

Ms. Marvel is Coming to Town!

Let me start off by saying, I don’t know much about the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). There are a ton of Marvel films I still need to see (I’ll get to it)! But you can bet, the day Ms. Marvel is available on Disney+, I will be ready to watch.

Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani) is a 16-year-old Pakistani-American school student from New Jersey who is trying to find her place in the world. While trying to figure out where she belongs, Kamala gains the ability to harness cosmic energy, giving her superpowers similar to the heroes she’s looked up to. SIGN ME UP!

I am so excited to see this representation! I am a Muslim, who was born in Karachi, Pakistan and to see a young woman of a similar background be a superhero while dealing with the trials of tribulations of being a teenager of two different cultures has me so thrilled. What I would have done to have this in my adolescence, maybe then I wouldn’t have shunned my roots, and learned to appreciate parts of my identity earlier in life.

Unfortunately, Disney+ is not available in Pakistan, however it will be released in theaters giving Muslims of all ages a chance to see themselves on the big screen!

Ms. Marvel premieres on June 8, don’t miss it! - Neha Aziz, Community Programs Director & Film Programmer
