KAILI BLUES (路边野餐)

In the city of Kaili in the southwestern province of Guizhou, small-town doctor and ex-con Chen Sheng decides to fulfill his dead mother’s wish and embarks on a journey to try to find his brother’s abandoned son. Through the rain and fog, filmmaker Bi Gan presents a dreamy, poetic landscape with carefully orchestrated direction and striking cinematography. Shot in Bi’s hometown with a cast of local villagers and relatives, the film is a tour-de-force debut that weaves together past and present. With KAILI BLUES compared to the works of Andrei Tarkovsky, Hou Hsiao-hsien, and Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Bi is an up and coming new voice in cinema.
